Why Bedding Quality Matters
in Thoroughbred Racing

The science of respirable dust, HISA alignment, and chain of custody traceability.

Dust in the Stall is a Performance Problem

Inflammatory Airway Disease (IAD) is one of the most common performance-limiting conditions in racehorses. Unlike full-blown heaves, IAD presents subclinically — horses appear healthy but show measurable reductions in VO₂ max, respiratory efficiency, and recovery rate.

The primary driver? Respirable dust particles in the stall environment — specifically PM2.5 to PM10 particles that penetrate deep into airway tissue. The main source of those particles is the bedding itself.

A horse spends 20+ hours a day in its stall. If that stall air is loaded with respirable dust, the cumulative airway impact is significant — and measurable in race day performance.

Triple Screening: How It Actually Works

Most bedding is screened once — if at all. We screen three times, at three different mesh grades, to systematically eliminate every category of dust particle.

1
Coarse Screen — 8 mesh

Removes oversized debris, bark fragments, and foreign material. Ensures product uniformity before the second screen. Targets particles above 2.36mm.

2
Medium Screen — 20 mesh

Targets mid-range particles between 0.85mm–2.36mm. This is the range most single-screen products miss entirely — the particles that become airborne during stall activity.

3
Fine Screen — 50 mesh

The critical final pass. Targets sub-0.3mm particles — the respirable PM2.5–PM10 range that penetrates deep into equine airway tissue and drives IAD development.

It Starts With Where It Comes From

Not all pine bedding comes from the same place. Ours comes exclusively from a manufacturer that produces nothing but pine equine bedding — one species, one purpose, nothing else.

Pine-Only Mill

Our manufacturer produces exclusively pine equine bedding — that's their entire operation. No mixed wood species, no shared production lines, no compromises from other product runs.

Purpose-Made for Horses

This isn't a lumber mill running bedding as a side product. Every piece of equipment, every process, and every quality decision at our manufacturer is built around equine bedding — nothing else.

Strict Quality Control

A manufacturer that only makes one product has every incentive to make it right every time. Strict internal quality standards mean you get the same consistent product, run after run.

Zero Additives

No binders, no dyes, no chemical treatments, no fillers. 100% pine — because a mill that makes nothing but pine equine bedding has no reason to put anything else in it.

HISA & the Future of Barn Standards

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority is moving the industry toward higher, more consistent welfare standards — and that includes the stall environment. HISA's welfare rules already address medication, track safety, and veterinary protocols. Barn air quality and bedding material standards are a logical next step.

Barns that are already using low-dust, pure-pine bedding from a dedicated equine manufacturer aren't just doing the right thing for their horses — they're ahead of the regulatory curve. When standards tighten, the answer is already in the stall.

Our product comes from a manufacturer that makes nothing but pine equine bedding. That exclusivity — one mill, one product, one species — is the foundation of the quality story we can tell with confidence.
